Tool Cool - Shears & Knife Maintenance Workshop

May 24, 2019

It is important to work with good tools. Whether you are a chef who has invested in a beautiful knife, a gardener with a comfortable pair of shears, or a tailor with your favourite pair of scissors, we all use cutting tools.

While shiny new tools have their appeal, sometimes, old is gold. And older tools can be maintained to ensure that they are safe and perform well. This workshop aims to equip you with the skills and resources to keep your tools in cutting condition.

During this workshop, learn:

  • The science of sharpening and polishing.

  • Terminology and definitions.

  • The anatomy of a knife and the blade.

  • About different types of edges and how to treat them.

  • How to pick out the best tools for your trade.

  • More about the equipment required, and how to select the right maintenance tools.

During the hands-on portion, you will:

  • Learn and practice proper polishing techniques, with the equipment provided that you will be able to bring home.

  • Learn and try your hand at sharpening your knife using the whetstone method.

Take home a sharpening kit worth $59, inclusive of a Japanese sharpening stone and polishing materials.

Ready, Set, Grow! Edible Garden City Talk & Tour

June 01, 2019

At Edible Garden City, urban farming is more than just a cool buzz word to us; it’s our whole way of life! With our sights firmly set on helping Singapore become more food resilient, we have what we believe is the future of farming, right here and now.

Join us as we share the secrets to success - under-utilised spaces, indoor farming systems and native plants. Get a head-start on joining the urban farming movement in Singapore, with the Ready, Set, Grow! Edible Garden City Talk & Tour!

Sip on a welcome drink brewed from locally-grown herbs, as our farmer brings you through our unique urban farming solution. Join as they share their journey to becoming an urban farmer, and anecdotes of a lesser-trodden path. Learn about the closed-loop and minimal-waste model of growing vegetables that we adopt here in our urban farm, and how farming could be used as a platform to create a more inclusive society.

Find out how we are reconnecting city dwellers with nature, and about sustainable farming systems such as regenerative agriculture and food forestry. Kickstart your own farm at home during the hands-on planting activity.

Make your own recyclable self-watering planter and bring home a pot with a plant cutting of your choice. For this segment, participants are reminded to bring any 1 litre plastic water bottle that they wish to recycle.

This tour is designed for young adults and adults aged 13 and up.

The Family that Farms Together Tour

June 01, 2019

The “Family that Farms Together” Tour is our flagship Talk & Tour with a family-friendly twist. Create everlasting family memories in our specially-designed family farm tour! Inspire a love of nature within your children, and share with them the importance of caring for our environment.

Enjoy a welcome drink made from freshly-harvested herbs, before a multi-sensory interactive walk around our farm with one of our farmers. Learn how we use insects to recycle food waste, and how we believe the future of farming will take shape!

In addition, experience being a farmer for a day; smell, taste and touch the edible plants that we grow, and understand the importance of using sustainable, pesticide-free farming methods.

It’s not a true farm day without getting your hands a little dirty! Feed our free-ranging chickens Popeyes, Sarah and JQ (named after our farmers!), and kickstart your own little farm. Make your own recyclable self watering planter, and assemble your own personal pot of plant to bring home! For this segment, participants are reminded to bring any 1 litre plastic water bottle that they wish to recycle.

This tour is for families with young children aged 3-12 years old. Hence, adults must be accompanied with at least one child aged 3-12 years old. All children must be accompanied by at least one adult.
